#137 It Is Finished!

The 5th Day (Thursday) of the Final Week
From Matt 27:45-56, Mark 15:33-41, Luke 23:44-49, and John 19:28-30

Later that afternoon Jesus suddenly cried out, “Eloi, Eloi, lema, sabachthani?”  When translated it means, “My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?”

Some of people standing by misunderstood what he said and asserted, “Look, he is calling for the prophet Elijah to come and rescue him!”

      Then Jesus said, “I’m thirsty.”

Someone there had a container filled with sour wine and offered it to Jesus.  One of the people found a sponge and put it on the end of a hyssop branch.  Then he dipped it in the wine and held it up to Jesus’ mouth.

One of those who thought he had called for Elijah said, “Leave him alone. I want to see if Elijah comes to rescue him.”

After he took a sip of the wine, Jesus shouted, “Father into your hands I commit my spirit!”

Then he announced, “It is finished!”

At 3:00 PM, the exact time the lambs were being slain at the temple for the Passover meals of the Israelite people that evening, Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

At that moment the veil in temple in front of the Holy of Holies was torn in two from the top to the bottom.  And a great earthquake took place, rocks split a part, tombs were opened, and the darkness lifted (Later after Jesus was raised from the dead, Godly men and women from times past came out of those tombs and were seen by many people walking around in the holy city of Jerusalem).

The Roman soldiers who were still standing by the cross, were terrified at the earth quake and everything they had seen take place that day.  They cried out, “It has to be true that this was the son of God!”

Their commander said, “There is no doubt that he was an innocent man.”

The huge crowd of people who had wandered away from the crucifixion site came running back.  When they saw what had happened they beat their chests in sorrow and went home in deep mourning.

The women who had been by the cross had backed away and were watching all of this take place from a distance. John was still with them and they had been joined by his mother, Salome, the wife of Zebedee and Mary, the mother of the younger James and Joseph.  There were many other women there as well and they had all followed Jesus from Galilee to take care of him during his ministry.
